What is Women's Health Physiotherapy?

Women's health physiotherapists have a special interest in working with and caring for women throughout their lifespan. Most commonly in the areas of pre and post-pregnancy and in the area of gynaecology with pelvic pain and continence concerns.

Physiotherapy can improve the quality of women's lives by empowering them to take control of their concerns.

This includes managing problems associated with:

  • pregnancy
  • postnatal recovery
  • bladder and bowel concerns
    • Stress incontinence
    • Urgency incontinence
  • pelvic organ prolapse
  • persistent pelvic pain
  • endometriosis
  • sexual pain

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy

Our women’s health assessments are conducted in a private, secure room by a female physiotherapist.

During the assessment, your physiotherapist will take a detailed medical history and discuss your concerns. In some cases, an internal vaginal examination may be recommended to assess pelvic floor function and help create the most effective treatment plan for you.

Your comfort and consent are our priority. Your physiotherapist will explain the examination in detail and obtain your consent before proceeding. You can say “no” at any time, even after giving consent, and you may bring someone with you for support if it helps you feel more comfortable.

Internal examinations can be performed during your period if you wish, but this is entirely up to you. If an internal examination isn’t suitable or you prefer not to have one, there are other assessment and treatment options available.

All towels and necessary supplies are provided, and your physiotherapist will answer any questions you have before or during your session.
